"works - but horrible toxic gasket and hard to open" 2010-01-25
By M. King (Sausalito, CA)
I own this - and love it - super quick and easy to use and clean - only problem is that I tossed out the rubber gasket because it's HORRIBLY toxic and smelly (like others stated) and made my coffee taste like rubber. I didn't have a replacement, so I simply took it out and just screw it together tightly enough that it doesn't leak (and it doesn't - except maybe a drop or two here and there). Use it every day, but It it SOOO difficult to unscrew after each use. Going to buy an upgraded model, but it works!

"Gasket made this espresso maker no bargain" 2009-09-14
By David Ammerman (Massachusetts, USA)
I too had the "stinky gasket" problem, and I was also able to solve it with the Bialetti replacement gasket. The interior had a rough finish with irregular globs of aluminum, suggesting that their factory quality control is poor, but that does not seem to affect the function of the coffee maker. When I was done, I had spent about $25, so this cheap espresso maker was no bargain. If I had to do it again, I would buy one of the products with a silicone gasket.

It's quite small, so be advised that the 4 cups are demitasse, but perfect for one person. I like the sturdiness of its stainless steel construction and it makes great tasting espresso. With its dual-chamber design I can quickly pressurize and brewing my espresso. A great product to make your own espresso, I love it!

By badger (California)
Like the other stove top espresso makers, including the now discontinued Walmart brand that cost half as much, it does nice work brilliantly. Various reviewers of these devices obviously don't understand how to operate them. Read the six line instructions.

The stench on the gasket is so nasty, it stinks up the house. I tried soaking in vinegar for 24 hours, isopropyl alcohol for 24 hours, lighter fluid for 6 hours. It is no longer as bad as it was. This stinky gasket must be redesigned. There is no excuse for it.

epilog: Bialetti 06951 replacement gasket is clean and sweet.

"Quick, easy, delicious but you have to watch it carefully" 2009-07-18
By LivApriori (Southern California, USA)
Just bought this and it works great. You put water in the bottom, add coffee to the filter/funnel. As steam builds, it forces water up through the funnel and then through the coffee and you get this lovely espresso. My only warning (and this applies to all brands of stovetop espresso makers of this type) is that you have to stay close by as the coffee brews. Once all the water has boiled off, you have to turn off the heat or move the pot off or else you will have a nasty mess.

 "Bialetti Stovetop Espresso Maker" 2009-11-02
By D. Ross (Auburn, California United States)
I was first introduced to the Bialetti Stovetop Espresso Maker at a weekend reunion. A friend who shares an appreciation for a quality cup of coffee brought one with him knowing that we wouldn't have an espresso machine nearby. We fired it up on the stove, poured it off,and enjoyed an excellent cup of coffee. After I got back home, I purchased one for myself. The first brew on the new Bialetti was while camping on the coast. It worked great on the Coleman stove. I love my home espresso machine but the Bialetti is hard to beat, at home or away, when it comes to convenience and a quality cup of coffee. Great for brewing at work as well.

"Bialetti Gaskets and Filters - Warning" 2009-08-01
By Scott Fairbairn (Washington DC Metro Area)
The official BialettiShop dot com website asserts that the 9-cup and 10-cup filter and gasket sets are the same size. However, they are NOT the same size and the 9-cup filter and gasket combo does not work for the product with which it gets paired. The 10-cup Bialetti Class (aka Class Black) stovetop espresso unit is a great coffee maker. But nobody seems to carry/sell a replacement filter and gasket set that will fit it. As of the drafting of this review (20090731), no Amazon seller, including Amazon proper, offers the correct filter and gasket set for the 10-cup Class unit, even though there are several sellers that offer the unit itself. The only filter and gasket combo I've seen that fits the 10-cup Bialetti Class stovetop espresso unit is the original. And now that my original gasket is worn out completely, I have no gasket that works and can't seem to find one.

I purchased the 9-cup filter and gasket set from ChefTools, an excellent Amazon seller, but it doesn't work. It doesn't fit properly and cannot create an adequate seal. It is very clearly too small. Both the filter plate and rubber gasket are measurably smaller than the originals.

There is a singular caveat which I'll make on this subject. If, per chance, the aluminum Bialetti stovetop espresso unit replacement filters and gaskets are not entirely interchangeable with the stainless steel replacement filters and gaskets, this could potentially be a part of the problem. But if such is potentially the case, I can not find any such clarification anywhere in plain view for the benefit of consumer edification. Either way, I love my reliable 10-cup stainless steel Bialetti Class coffee maker, but the replacement filters and gaskets have left me with a pounding caffeine-withdrawal headache!

Got it as a present for my husband. It works well except that it can be messy, it tends to spray coffee over the stovetop. The cups are not always evenly filled and seems to depend on the level you fill the water. The rubber seems to be going, and will need to find a replacement, hopefully not difficult to find. We use this item several times per day.

In this case you would need a "Carded Pack for Aluminum Espresso Makers" in

this is a fantastic little espresso maker. I second the suggestion of moving one spout over.[...] You'll get an excellent cuppa. I drink A LOT of coffee. I've used various cheaper "home" espresso makers. They all sucked.

I don't use a wand for steaming. if that's an issue, this isn't for you. I'm all about the shots. gimmie gimmie. i've used this at least once a day since getting it, about 2 months. I'm still very happy with it. one improvement i might add to mine is a better handle. that little bit of plastic, or what ever it is, gets HOT if you leave it in the middle of the burner. Use it to one side of the burner. aside from that, wonderful device...

I love the espresso this makes....it is fast and delicious. It is a bummer it only comes in aluminum and it does require you combine the two cups because they can be unequal at times; I don't consistently get "crema". It will sputter coffee a bit if your cup isn't tall enough. I recommend this product though.

"User instructions for the Musa, which makes excellent espresso, need some attention" 2009-12-01
By Robert W. Pillow
My fun-loving life as a stove-stop barista would have begun much earlier if Bialetti just said the following:

"When you see the crema, you're done!"

Sadly, it was in my third month of use before I accidentally discovered that the Bialetti Musa generates crema similar to that of espresso machines. When I saw that tan foam floating inside the upper chamber the first time, I cut the heat then. The taste was better than before. In the following weeks, I learned the best time to take the heat off was when crema production reached it peak.

Peak production in my Musa is when the crema sits on 50-60 percent of the espresso surface measured about two inches from the lid. Allowing the pot to continue brewing after this coverage is reached results in the crema disappearing and the taste degrading.

Although the crema surface coverage is not full, the Musa espresso taste is rich -- more so than many coffee shop machine brews I've had.

The failure to note the crema generation is my only complaint. Now, that I've learned it on my own, my low-tech Musa produces high-brow espresso.

If you want to drink mud then this is the pot for you.

A total waste of money ! ! ! I tossed this pot in the trash ! ! !

The ability of this pot to brew a good cup of coffee is non existent ! ! !

And, it is not my coffee brewing skills.

I use peaberry estate beans from Hawaii and burr grind the coffee beans fresh for each pot. And, have always had wonderful tasting coffee that was not bitter.

Unlike the coffee that has come out of this pot. Bitter doesn't even begin to describe this muddy brew.

The quality of the pot is first rate and that is the only reason I gave a rating of 1 star.

"Made in Italy?? TRY MADE IN INDIA!..." 2009-03-10
By Claudio Cocchiaro (USA)
When I ordered this Bialetti Espresso Coffee Maker I was sure I was getting one made in Italy. But (deceptive advertising?) the one I got was made in India... Is there any difference in the product? I own other sizes and can tell the difference. The difficult lid handle is one of them, plus the craftsmanship and finish are remarcably inferior. Yes, it makes good coffee, but now that is not the issue. All I can say is that I did not get what I bought. Why there was no disclosing of the product origin, but all you read makes you THINK you are getting a product made in Italy? I consider myself deceived.

 "Musa Espresso Maker" 2009-01-09
By M. McCluskey (Wisconsin)
Like everyone else I dislike the tab on the top to open this thing up, but you don't need to do it much. Overall it's a nice machine for what I was trying to accomplish: greater volume and stainless steel. It's puzzling to me that the vessel at the top holds so much more than the bottom, so it's hard to judge when it is done because the top will only be about 1/2 full and it doesn't make as much noise as my last espresso maker so sometimes I wait too long and other times there is still water in the bottom when I'm cleaning it. But when I get it right the espresso is very good and I am pretty pleased with this product. I hope this helps you. I was greatly helped in selecting this one from the reviews of others.

Solid construction, good size as fits perfectly under the group-head of my espresso maker (Gaggia Carezza), and is dishwasher safe. After a pricey plumber bill (apparently the garbage disposal doesn't like daily coffee grinds)I finally purchased this and can collect the used pucks for my indoor and outdoor plants, compost and otherwise dispose of them in happy, good ways. At first it seemed like it might be too small for a standard size portafilter. Not so. From first use, total joy.

It's just what we needed. After a major bill to a plumber who told us that coffee grounds collect like sand and clog pipes, we decided that $30 for a knock box was money well invested.

As many have said, the box is too small for commercial use but it's perfect for home and it even fits under the pour spout on the espresso machine for storage. The rubber feet and squat design hold it steady on the counter. The bar is wide, sturdy and rubber coated so it's not likely to dent your filter unit. And the low cut front edge insures that you don't accidentally hit the handle or your finger on the edge.

I think $30 is too high of a mark-up, but nothing cheaper looked nearly as functional. If ours was stolen by a coffe loving burglar (I don't expect it will break) I would buy another immediately.

I have to admit that I was very surprised at how small this little guy was, but the quality definitely makes up for that. It's great for at least a days worth of puck (depending on how many shots you brew of coarse). TO get an idea of how small it is, it was designed to fit under the portafilter for storage on home espresso machines.

I would definitely buy this box again. It's a perfect addition to my coffee bar.

You can tell this unit came off of a speedy assembly line. Cheap plastic handle which is held by a single screw that continually needs to be tightened & the machine threads of the two sections of the pot are offset so the coffee pot sits at angle & does not seal. From reading past posts I can see that about 60% of the units have this problem. Complete waste of money.

This product is product is extremely overprice for such poor quality. The performance of this coffee maker is abysmal.

The big issue is that wont seal properly even after applying good amount of force, about 30% the water gets release on joints instead of going up.

I saw a bialleti made of aluminum original from Italy and they look at least 5 times better quality that this one that is made on India, just look the difference on the plastics, the finishing and side valve.

Now I have to buy another coffee maker of this because does not work, and I'm unable to return this because a bought this from a amazon third party seller.

Go a buy the aluminium version .. not this.

I appreciate a purchase that is exactly what it claims to be, and that is what the Bialetti Venus is. I understand that some connoisseurs dislike the coffee produced by stainless steel, but comparing coffee that comes out of this with that from an aluminum Bialetti, I find the Venus produces a less brash cuppa. It seems sturdy and I don't foresee replacing it for a very long time. Moreover, it looks great and brews fast. The best coffee-making tool I have owned.

I have an aluminum model and I have not had any problems for years. I merely wanted an upgrade. I was skeptical of this model based on others reviews, and I received one of the bad ones. For whatever reason it just didn't work. Odd as there are minimal parts, and I checked for obvious clogs, etc. and there did not appear to be any. Perhaps it was the over pressure valve, etc.

I went with another option instead, and wouldn't recommend this product, as I had to pay shipping 2x (initial and return) and it isn't worth rolling the dice.
